What is the difference between a Salesperson and a Broker?

The major differences between salespersons and brokers are license requirements and client interaction. Brokers are generally required to have more education and sales experience than real estate salespersons. A real estate salesperson is licensed by the state, but must work for a broker.

How many hours do I need to be a salesperson? 

75 Hours

Do I need any previous sales experience?

You do not need previous sales experience as we pride ourselves in being the best training firm in Brooklyn.

Are there any education requirements?

There are not education requirements, however there is an age requirement of 18 years old.

I have a previous felony/misdemeanor. Can I still get a sales license?

When can I start classes?

Anytime! Sales classes are offered six days a week (2 class sessions daily Monday – Saturday).

Are there supplies or books I’ll need for this course?

You may need to take notes during the lessons, so bring a highlighter and a notepad. We also offer our students a textbook authored by the Department of State for a fee of $50.00.

How can I register and pay for classes or materials at BREA?

Please see the registration page and products offered on the Home page of this site. You may also register and pay in person at the school location.

Can I register for courses on the same day that they are being offered?

Yes! Registration is always ongoing, and you can attend the same day. Please arrive 30 minutes prior to the class start (for a list of class schedules, click “schedules” on our index tab).

Is there a certain time limit to complete the salesperson course?

You have four (4) months from the time you attend your first course to complete the sales course and school exam.

How long is each sales class?

Each class is approximately 2 ½ to 3 hours long.

What does the salesperson course include?

The Salesperson course includes 20 modules (classes) that will give you all the information you need to be a salesperson. See the various packages offered in the registration part of the Home page. 

Can I repeat a class if I need extra information?

You are more than welcome to repeat any of the 20 classes. Please note you will only receive hourly class credit the first time you attend a class.

Does BREA offer tutoring if I do not understand the content and is there a fee?

Absolutely! Tutoring sessions are held by our certified NYREI instructors every Monday 9:00 am, and one evening and one weekend per month. The cost is $50.00 for a 2 hour session.

Do I have to attend all 20 modules? What if I miss a course?

In order to be eligible for our school exam as well as the state exam, you must complete 18 out of the 20 modules, totaling 67.5 hours of mandatory class time. If you miss a course, you can make it up by looking at the schedule for the class of the topic you missed.

Do I have to take the 20 modules in any particular order?

No, all our lessons are independent of one another. You don’t need information from one lesson in order to move on to the next one. You can start classes in any order.

I’ve completed the 75 hour sales class requirements. What’s next?

You must take our school exam. Upon achieving a 70% passing grade or higher, you will receive a certificate of completion.

Do I have to pre-register for the school exam?

No you do not. We offer the school exam throughout the week (see schedule) as well as one weekend a month and one week night a month.

What if I fail the school exam? 

No worries, you can always schedule to retake the exam by appointment only. You have two attempts to pass the exam within 4 months from the start of the class.

I passed my school exam. Now what?

You will receive a certificate of completion. Save this certificate, as it proves you’ve completed all coursework. The State Department may or may not ask you to mail it in to them at some point. If you haven’t done so already, you must obtain an eAccess account on the Department of State website, eaccessny.This account will allow you to register for your state exam.

Can I take the state exam before the school exam?

Yes, you can take both the state and school exam in any order you like, but you must successfully pass both exams in order to apply for your license.

How do I sign up for the state exam?

You must go to your local Department of State to take the exam at eaccessny. The cost for the exam is $15.00.

I passed the state exam. What’s next?

Congratulations! You now must find a broker to sponsor you. Once you’ve done so, you can formally apply for your Salesperson License. The cost to apply for your sales license is $55.00. Once you receive it, you can start working immediately.

How do I find a broker to sponsor me?

We have brokers that come to BREA to recruit students. They actively recruit between classes, so feel free to stay and listen to what they have to say. You’re also welcome to find a broker independently.
